A prong setting (sometimes called claw setting), is the most commonly used gemstone setting and is especially popular for solitaire engagement rings.
How dose it work:
A gem is inserted into three or more metal prongs (also called the “head” in the jewelry industry) that form a basket-like base, while allowing the facets of the gemstone to catch light.
Then, the ends of the prongs are bent over and shaped so that they rest against the crown (the top part of a gem stone from the girdle and up).
A prong setting can be tall, resting the diamond well above the ring's band, or it can be short, with the stone resting closer to your finger.
